Victoria Chiropractor : Dr. Mike Newberry

Providing chiropractic care to people of all ages for 16 years

Have you ever noticed the people that are most passionate about their career choice seem to have that destiny mapped out from childhood? I consider myself one of those fortunate individuals.

My Chiropractic Story…

Victoria Chiropractor, Dr. Mike Newberry

Dr. Mike Newberry

It all came about as the result of an astute decision by a nurse to seek out an answer for her 2 year old son who was in serious condition due to severe childhood asthma. Back then Asthma inhalers did not exist. When I lost the ability to breathe effectively my mother, an RN, wasted no time taking me to the doctor.

I ended up in the hospital numerous times, and the only treatment medicine had to offer back then was to put me in an oxygen tent. This went on for awhile, but as any loving parent would do my mother began to look for alternatives. She found one that did not at that time garner much support from the medical profession… Chiropractic.

My treatments with Dr. A. Berti in Vancouver did not completely cure my Asthma, but got it under control and enabled me to live a normal life. With an introduction to Chiropractic like that it was easy to see my life’s purpose!

What I find most amazing today working as a Chiropractor in Victoria is twofold:

How people make it to age 30, 40, 50 or 60 without ever having had the benefit of Chiropractic care, and how long people will live with pain, symptoms and other health issues that are so readily correctable through Chiropractic!

Don’t let someone tell you you’ll just have to “live with it,” including that voice in your own mind. Though Chiropractic care is not able to fix everything for everyone, you owe it to yourself to give it a try- it may just change your life as it did mine!

Chiropractic Education

Dr. Newberry began his pre-chiropractic education at Camosun And UVIC where he studied pre-med science courses including biology, physics, biochemistry, microbiology, organic chemistry, geology, psychology, oceanography and physiology. After completing his studies here in Victoria, Dr. Newberry was accepted into the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic School in Toronto. During his four years at CMCC courses included embryology, histology, neuroscience, neuroanatomy, pathology, with major emphasis on human anatomy, physiology, X-ray diagnosis, chiropractic adjusting technique and patient care in the H.K. Lee and satellite outpatient clinics.

While undertaking his Chiropractic studies, Dr. Newberry worked part time at the Sunnybrook Science Center teaching hospital, in the emergency department as a nurses aid. Dr. Newberry gained much experience with emergency health care as this hospital served as the regional trauma center for southwestern Ontario. Through his extensive education and numerous ongoing seminars to learn about emerging healing techniques Dr. Newberry has developed a strong interest in the nerve system and its effects on overall health, how acute problems often develop into chronic disorders and how this can be prevented.

Practice philosophy and care objectives

Most people who have never been to a chiropractor have some level of apprehension or fear of the unknown. This is normal. Knowing how much potential Chiropractic adjustments have to offer, as a Chiropractor, I feel a sense of duty to help people understand Chiropractic, enjoy the benefits it has to offer and stop suffering needlessly. The only way to do this is to take the trust that you place in me, as your Chiropractor very seriously.

I have developed a special interest in making sure all my patients have a very positive, relaxing and uplifting experience with chiropractic care. To do this I always explain everything that we do, and never do anything you are not comfortable with.

Through my 16 years of providing chiropractic care to people of all ages, and working as the team chiropractor for the Victoria Shamrocks senior men’s lacrosse team (`96-`98), I have come to realize that whether you are an elite athlete with a sports injury or someone with a desk job and the desire become more active and healthy, quality Chiropractic adjustments are an important first step that can help you to reach your health goals.

Outside the office

When out of the office Dr. Mike can be found hiking, cycling, running, staying fit at the gym, skiing, motorcycling, trying NOT to have any more birthdays, fixing cars, renovating, camping, walking his dog, or simply trying to keep up with his spouse and three kids.

My patients often ask me if I get my spine adjusted and how often, and the answer is absolutely. Chiropractic adjustments have always been an important part of my life and I simply can’t imagine how much less I would be able to do and enjoy in life without them. In addition, I try to exercise regularly and take some nutritional supplements to help counter the overly refined nature that most foods today are subject to (and to counter my occasional culinary transgressions!).

Regular Exercise

Emerging research is starting to show a very strong connection between regular exercise and both quality of life and life expectancy. In order to get regular exercise, I have arranged my work schedule so that I have a little extra time over the lunch hour to get out and exercise. I find that this sort of routine recharges me for the rest of the day, and because I have put this time aside I always feel obligated to do something, even if it means just going for a walk instead of the gym or a run.

If you are reading this then you or someone you care about has a spinal health issue that I can help with. If you have talked about it with friends and/or other health professionals you may be more confused about what to do about it than when you started asking. This is normal because everyone has either had a back problem or knows someone who has, and this makes them think they have the answers!

If you want to know and understand exactly why you are hurting, why the pain seems to come and go, and how to fix it, then give me a call or click on the email link on this page. My patients tell me I’m pretty good at what I do, but I can only help you if you get in touch with me!
